- Students have the right to access network electronic mail, selected public network, forums and selected educational network resources. They have the right to access information that is free from hate propaganda, sexist, homophobic, racist, pornographic or obscene content. They have the right to be free from harassment and unsolicited contact. Students should be aware that school email and Internet use may be examined by teachers or other staff members.
- In return, students have the following responsibilities:
-
- 1. Keep your password a secret. Only tell your teacher. Do not let other students use the computer under your name and password.
- 2. Demonstrate respect for other users. No swearing, threats or offensive comments.
- 3. Do not access information that does not meet the standards of good taste that exist in the classroom. Do not access chat rooms.
- 4. Do not access the Internet without your teacher’s permission. You must be supervised by a staff member when on the Internet.
- 5. Do not download anything. Do not upload anything without your teacher’s permission.
- 6. Do not install or delete any programs on Tyee’s computers. Do not change settings on the computers without the teacher’s permission.
- 7. Tell your teacher immediately if you accidentally find an offensive site, or if someone sends you offensive email.
- 8. Never give information about yourself to strangers on the Internet. Check with your teacher before sending email to a website.
-
- Remember that email is not very private. It is available to the system administrators to look at in the event of a complaint or problem. Also, the system can keep track of the sites that individual users visit. The system administrators can look at the sites an individual has visited if there is a problem, or to spot check class activity.

- Users who do not uphold these responsibilities may lose their access privileges.

- INTERNET POLICY

-
-
- 1. Students use the Internet at school only under the supervision of a teacher. Students found to be using the Internet without supervision will:
- a. receive a verbal warning, plus a letter home (after 1st infraction)
- b. receive a three month suspension of Internet privileges, his/her name will be placed on a list in the library to facilitate supervision, and a letter will be sent home (after 2nd infraction)
- c. receive suspension of Internet and computer privileges until the end of the school year, irrespective of how long this is, a letter home and their name to stay on the list in the library (after the 3rd infraction).
-
- Rationale: This policy is based on the need to ensure appropriate educational use of the computers, student safety, and opportunities for teacher guidance in the appropriate use of the Internet as an educational tool.
-
- 2. Students at Tyee are expected to behave in a kind and respectful manner to all members of the Tyee community and those in the larger world community. Any bullying behaviour will be regarded as being inconsistent with these expectations, whether this happens on the school ground or is an example of cyber bullying (through e-mails, blogs, web pages chat lines, etc.) or takes another form (e.g. phone calls or text messaging). This will also apply to behaviours that originate at home, but are then published in the public domain such as on the Internet. The following actions would be taken in any case of bullying:
-
- a. The principal will investigate the situation.
- b. Parents of both the victim and the perpetrator will be contacted and asked to come to the school to collaborate in solving the problem. Facilitation of this process may be provided, where appropriate, by the School Counsellor, School Liaison Officer, or other knowledgeable person involved in conflict resolution.
- c. It would be an expectation that the bullying actions would cease and that appropriate solutions and consequences would be proposed and acted upon.
- d. The school administration will be prepared to suspend students involved in any form of bullying if a solution is not found, and/or if the bullying continues.
